Diagnostic description:
Annual herb, erect, up to 1 m tall, woody, spiny; spines 3-5 mm long, straight, white; branches covered with whitish scurfy tomentum. Leaves long petiolate; petiole spiny, lamina ovate or ovate lanceolate, 2-8 x 0.5-5 cm, sinuate lobed, apex acuminate or obtuse, appressed stellate-hairy on both surfaces. Flowers violet, in small cymes. Calyx enlarging and becoming very spiny in fruit. Fruit berry, yellow, globose, 1 cm in diameter.

Tropical Africa, Egypt, Southern Arabia. The Farasan Islands.
